Frequently Asked Questions

About Age

Do we need to do traditional or “mommy & me” lessons first?

That’s a common concern but here’s the truth:

Traditional swim lessons can actually make things harder.

They’re often designed for fun and games (and sometimes just singing songs), not water safety. And in doing so, they teach habits that go against what kids actually need in a real emergency.

Here’s what we mean:

They teach blowing bubbles.
We teach breath control — because if your child ever falls in, we want them holding their breath… not blowing it out.

They teach vertical body positioning.
We teach horizontal movement — so your child can float, swim, and breathe independently.

They focus on reaching the wall.
We focus on calm, life-saving survival skills — like flipping to float and staying calm until help arrives.

When kids are taught to panic and paddle to the edge at all costs, they may exhaust themselves or sink before they ever get there. That’s not water-safe. That’s wishful thinking.

And when they’re taught to blow bubbles and stay vertical, it creates habits we have to un-teach later — which slows progress and adds stress.

So what should I do instead?

If you’re waiting for lessons or want to help your child feel more comfortable in the water, here are a few gentle things you can do at home or in your backyard pool:

✅ Pour water over their face in the bath — slowly and playfully
✅ Let them float on their back in your arms while singing or playing
✅ Practice short submersions with verbal cues (like “1-2-3 under!”)
✅ Encourage them to lay horizontal in the tub or shallow pool
✅ Let them climb in and out of the pool to build confidence

These activities help your child start building a healthy relationship with water — without reinforcing bad habits that could slow their progress later.

The best part?

Once they begin Infant Aquatics® survival swim lessons, they’ll already be familiar with water on their face, back-floating, and trusting the process.

We’ve taught dozens of kids who started with traditional swim programs… and their parents always say the same thing:

“I wish we had started here first.”

How can you teach a baby who isn’t even talking yet?

You’d be surprised how much your baby is already communicating — even without words.

Infant Aquatics® instructors are trained to read nonverbal cues like body language, eye contact, breath control, and muscle tension. With over 100 hours of hands-on, in-water training — plus coursework in child development — we know how to meet each baby where they are.

Swimming and floating are sensory-motor skills, like crawling or walking. Babies don’t need to follow instructions — they learn through experience, repetition, and trust.

When should my child begin survival swim lessons?

Short answer: Begin as early as comfort and development allow—ideally around 6–12 months—and certainly by age 1.

Why that window matters:
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1–4. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends teaching children basic swim and survival skills once they’re developmentally ready—typically around 1 year old.

Why earlier is better:
Survival swim programs like ours can begin safely with babies as young as 6 months. At this age, your child can learn life-saving skills—like floating, rolling to breathe, and swim-float-swim—well before traditional lessons ever start.

What to look for:
Make sure the program is taught by certified instructors trained in child development, and uses age-appropriate, one-on-one methods—not group lessons or cookie-cutter classes.

How we do it at South Shore Infant Aquatics:

At South Shore Infant Aquatics, we welcome babies as young as 6 months, using play-based, sensory techniques to gently introduce them to the water. By 12 months, most children are ready for full survival swim training.

Starting early helps build water awareness, trust, and muscle memory—so your child is safer before they ever get near a pool on their own.

Can my baby or toddler really learn survival swim skills?

Yes, absolutely. Babies and toddlers learn survival swim skills much like they learn to crawl or walk—through playful, repetitive movement rather than words.

Our instructors, trained in child development, use gentle techniques that guide your child to naturally develop key skills like breath control and floating.

Over time, these behaviors become part of your child’s way of moving in water, making them safer in real situations.

How often do classes need to be to make real progress?

Smaller children need short, intensive lessons—4 days a week—to build essential survival skills quickly, while older kids can safely move into less frequent group classes.

At SSIA, our core survival swim program runs Monday–Thursday for 6-7 weeks (depending on weather), with 12 minute private lessons each day. This daily repetition creates muscle memory, water familiarity, and confidence—far more effective than the typical once-a-week, 30-minute traditional lessons that can drag on for months or even years without true progress.

As your child gets older—around 4 years and up—they can start transitioning into group classes (Coming Soon) twice a week, focusing on stroke development and confidence-building. This mix keeps costs manageable while ensuring ongoing improvement.

We believe in effectiveness first—not empty schedules. We don’t offer endless weekly lessons just to pad profits. If your child is ready to advance, our programs shift accordingly. If they need more focused training, we deliver it efficiently.

That’s how real safety gets built—without wasting time or money.

Is my child too old to benefit from Infant Aquatics®?

Not at all.

At SSIA, we offer programs for kids of all ages — from 6-month-old babies to school-age beginners who still need to master basic swim and safety skills.

Our Infant Aquatics® survival swim program is ideal for younger children, but older kids benefit just as much — and often learn even faster thanks to stronger bodies and more coordination.

If your child isn’t yet water-safe, they’re not too old — they’re right on time.

And as we grow, we’re continuing to build out group classes and advanced progression options for older swimmers. But one thing will never change:

We’ll only offer programs that work. No wasting time. No blowing bubbles or singing songs for months.

Just effective, child-centered instruction designed to make kids safer, stronger swimmers — as soon as possible.

What if my child started traditional lessons—can we still switch?

Absolutely.

In fact, many families come to us after months (or even years) of traditional lessons that didn’t lead to real progress.

If your child isn’t water-safe yet, it’s not too late — and switching now might be the best decision you make.

Our instructors know how to gently retrain habits like vertical positioning, bubble-blowing, and relying on floaties - all of which we would highly recommend you avoid and can be very dangerous in a real emergency situation

We’ll meet your child where they are, build trust quickly, and teach them the life-saving skills traditional lessons often skip.

And we’ll do it in weeks — not years.

Do babies forget their skills over time?

Not exactly — but as your child grows, their body changes.

Muscles develop. Proportions shift. And the skills they mastered at 10 months may no longer work the same way at 18 months.

That’s why we offer short weekly progression lessons after graduation. These keep your child’s body and brain in sync — helping them adjust, stay confident, and build on what they’ve already learned.

It’s not about starting over. It’s about growing with them.

Why not just wait until my child is older to start?

Because drowning doesn’t wait.

It’s the #1 cause of accidental death for children under 4 — more than car crashes, fires, or choking. And according to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, 88% of drownings happen when an adult is present.

Waiting until they’re “ready” or older leaves them vulnerable during the years they’re most at risk.

The earlier your child learns real survival swim skills, the sooner you gain peace of mind — and the more time they get to enjoy the water safely.

It’s not about pushing them too young. It’s about protecting them while they’re still small, curious, and unaware of the danger.

About Our Approach

What makes your method different from other swim programs?

Most swim schools focus on comfort and fun first — and safety much later. Kids blow bubbles, sing songs, and splash around once a week… sometimes for years. But those lessons rarely lead to real safety in the water.

At South Shore Infant Aquatics, we do it differently — and intentionally.

We teach survival swim skills first — using a proven, play-based method that’s developmentally appropriate, emotionally safe, and results-driven.

Within just a few weeks, your child will learn how to:

🫧 How to hold their breath underwater
🌊 How to float calmly on their back to breathe and stay safe
🏊‍♀️ How to swim-float-swim to safety — even fully clothed
🧠 How to stay calm in real-life water emergencies

We don’t just teach them how to feel comfortable — we teach them how to be safe.

And because our method is built around trust, not trauma, kids actually enjoy the process. Many leave their lessons smiling, playing, and proud of what they’ve learned.

The best part? You get peace of mind knowing your child has real, life-saving skills — not just swim class memories.

How are lessons actually structured day-to-day?

Each lesson is one-on-one, just your child and their instructor, and lasts about 12 Minutes.

That might sound short — but for young children, short daily sessions are the most effective and emotionally safe way to build new skills.

We focus on one small step at a time, starting with trust and comfort in the water, then moving into floating, breath control, and swim-float-swim sequences.

Some days your child might work on floating fully clothed. Other days they may be practicing gentle underwater transitions or learning how to swim to safety.

Every lesson is personalized based on your child’s age, development, and personality — so they always feel supported, never pushed.

And because we meet four days a week, progress happens fast.

Will I need to get in the pool with my child?

Usually just at the beginning and end of the program.

We often invite parents into the water for the first lesson or two — especially with younger children. Having you nearby helps your child feel safe and supported as they adjust to the water.

Then, near graduation, we’ll have you back in the pool to learn how to safely practice with your child and keep their skills sharp after the program ends.

Do you use force, dunking, or fear-based techniques?

No. Never.

We don’t force kids to do anything they’re not ready for. There’s no dunking, no yelling, and no scare tactics — ever.

Infant Aquatics® is built on child development science, and our instructors are trained to build trust first.

Lessons are play-based, gentle, and emotionally safe. We meet each child where they are and work at their pace — not ours.

Is my child considered “drown-proof” after survival swim lessons?

No child is ever truly drown-proof and any program that claims otherwise isn’t being honest.

But what we can promise is this: your child will learn real, age-appropriate survival skills (like floating, swimming, breathing, and getting to safety) even fully clothed.

They’ll know how to respond if they fall in.

And you’ll know they’ve been trained by certified instructors who prioritize emotional safety and child development every step of the way.

Survival swim isn’t a silver bullet — but it is one of the most powerful layers of protection you can give your child.

And more than anything, it gives you something every parent deserves around the water: Peace of mind.

Because when your child has real skills, you don’t have to live in fear — you can finally breathe easier.

How do you keep kids emotionally safe during lessons?

It all starts with trust.

At South Shore Infant Aquatics, emotional safety is at the heart of everything we do. Our instructors complete over 100 hours of hands-on training, including coursework in early childhood psychology and child development, so we can recognize subtle cues like body language, breathing, and muscle tension — and respond with care.

We don’t rush. We don’t force. And we never use fear-based tactics.

Instead, we turn learning into play.

Whether it’s diving for rings, rescuing rubber ducks, or singing songs as we practice float skills, we use games and imagination to gently guide kids from play into purposeful movement. That’s how we introduce new skills without stress — and build confidence every step of the way.

Lessons are short (12 Minutes), personalized, and always one-on-one — so your child gets the attention and emotional connection they need to thrive.

If your child is nervous at first, we may invite you into the water during the early lessons to help them feel safe and supported. And near the end of the program, we’ll bring you back in to show you how to keep practicing and reinforcing skills at home.

Because when kids feel emotionally safe, they learn faster.

And when you leave lessons knowing your child was cared for and respected — you gain something just as important as water safety: Peace of mind.

What happens after my child completes the survival swim program?

Graduation isn’t the end — it’s just the beginning.

Once your child masters their survival swim skills, we recommend enrolling in short, weekly progression lessons. These are fun, play-based sessions designed to keep your child’s skills sharp as they grow and gain strength.

Just like walking or talking, swimming is a developmental skill — and as your child’s body changes, their technique needs to keep up. Weekly lessons help them maintain confidence in the water, improve stroke mechanics, and eventually transition into more advanced swimming.

And because we keep the focus on trust, play, and emotional safety, your child will continue to love the water — not just survive in it.

The best part? You’ll leave each lesson knowing your child is safer, stronger, and more confident than the week before.

Why don’t you offer once-a-week lessons like other places?

Because they don’t work — at least not if your goal is real safety, real progress, and real peace of mind.

Smaller children need consistent repetition to develop muscle memory and confidence in the water. Once-a-week lessons spread out learning too much, making it hard for kids to retain skills — and stretching a few weeks of progress into months (or even years) of frustration.

We’ve seen it too many times: families spending thousands on weekly lessons, only to have kids who still can’t float, swim, or get to safety.

That’s not what we’re about.

At South Shore Infant Aquatics, our program is designed to get results — quickly, gently, and effectively. That’s why we recommend 4 short lessons a week for about 7 weeks. It’s a focused season of learning that helps your child build skills faster and safer.

We’ll never ask you to keep showing up week after week “just to get comfortable.”

We’re here to get your child truly water-safe — and to give you peace of mind that lasts long after lessons end.

About Cost

How much do lessons cost?

Our pricing depends on your child’s age and the program they’re enrolling in — but every lesson is designed to deliver fast, lasting results.

We don’t drag things out with once-a-week sessions or surprise you with added fees. One price covers everything your child needs to learn real survival swim skills — usually in just 7 weeks.

We also offer follow-up progression lessons and sibling discounts for families who want to keep swimming safely and confidently beyond graduation.

You can see all current rates and options on our Programs Page.

Why are your swim lessons more expensive than other places?

They’re not — not when you actually break it down.

Let’s look at traditional swim schools first.

You might pay less per lesson… but those lessons often last 30 minutes, shared with 3 or 4 other kids. That means your child is only getting about 7 minutes of real instruction per week.

At $30 a week, that’s $1,500 a year — and many kids still aren’t water-safe after months (or years) of blowing bubbles and practicing kicks with a floatie.

Worse, some swim schools actually teach habits that could be dangerous in an emergency — like blowing out air underwater instead of holding their breath. That’s not just a waste of money. That’s a false sense of security.

Then there’s ISR.

Lessons are 5 days a week and billed per week — often $130 to $150, plus a registration fee of $100 or more. Most families spend 7 to 8 weeks in lessons, and many need more time beyond that. That’s easily $1,200+ per child. And here’s the kicker: the longer it takes, the more your instructor earns. So they’re not exactly incentivized to get your child swimming fast.

Here’s what we do instead:

At South Shore Infant Aquatics, we offer a flat, transparent price for our full survival swim program. No surprise fees. No endless add-ons. And no incentive for us to drag things out — because we guarantee results. If your child needs more time, we keep working with them at no extra cost.

We get your child safer faster.

You get peace of mind sooner.

It’s more than just swim lessons. It’s safety that lasts — and value that makes sense.

Do you offer a sibling discount?

We do! Families enrolling multiple children at the same time are eligible for a sibling discount.

We know investing in safety matters — and we want to make it easier for families to protect all their little ones at once. If you're enrolling more than one child, just let us know during registration, and we’ll apply the discount for you.

My child has been in lessons for months (or years) and still can’t swim. Can you help?

Absolutely — and you're not alone.

We hear this from parents all the time: “We’ve been in lessons for months… even years… and my child still can’t swim.”

The truth is, most traditional swim programs focus on comfort and familiarity, not real safety. Kids blow bubbles, sing songs, and maybe float with help — but they aren’t learning what to actually do if they fall into water unexpectedly.

At South Shore Infant Aquatics, we take a different approach.

We teach real survival swim skills first — like floating independently, breath control, and how to swim to safety — even fully clothed. And because we meet with your child multiple times a week in short, focused sessions, they make faster, more meaningful progress.

So yes... even if other lessons haven’t worked, we can help. And we guarantee it.

How do I know I’m not just wasting more money on another swim program?

That’s a fair question — especially if you’ve already spent months (or even years) in lessons that didn’t deliver.

Here’s what makes South Shore Infant Aquatics different:

We don’t drag things out. Our program is designed to get results quickly — most kids learn to float, swim, and reach safety in just 7 weeks.

We don’t charge surprise fees. You’ll pay one flat rate, and if your child needs more time, we continue working with them at no extra cost. That’s our 7-Week Mastery Guarantee.

We don’t waste your time. Our lessons are short, focused, and consistent — 4 days a week. That’s how skills develop quickly and stick long enough to transition into long-term swimming confidence.

And unlike traditional swim schools that might give your child 5-7 minutes of real instruction in a 30-minute class, our instructors are focused 100% on your child the entire time.

This isn’t just another swim program — it’s a smarter investment that actually helps your child become safer, faster.

No fluff. No fear. Just real progress and peace of mind.

Will I have to pay extra if my child needs more time to learn?

Not if you’ve followed the program.

Our flat-rate tuition covers 7 full weeks of daily lessons. Most children master their survival swim skills within 6 - 7 weeks — but if your child attends all scheduled lessons and still needs a bit more time, we’ll give you an extra week of lessons, free of charge.

And if your child finishes early, we will convert those remaining lessons into progression lessons.

No surprise fees. No extra weeks you didn’t plan for. Just a clear path to helping your child become water-safe — even if it takes a little longer.

That’s our 7-Week Mastery Guarantee.

What does your pricing include that other swim schools don’t offer?

At South Shore Infant Aquatics, you’re not just paying for swim time — you’re investing in real safety, faster progress, and peace of mind.

We’re experts in play-based learning. Every Infant Aquatics® instructor completes over 100 hours of hands-on, in-the-water training — plus coursework in child development, psychology, and behavior. That’s far more than most swim instructors receive.

So instead of cookie-cutter lessons or crowded group classes, your child gets a personalized, one-on-one experience designed to be safe, effective, and emotionally supportive.

And because our program was created by a former ISR® master instructor who believed survival swim could be taught better — without tears, trauma, or pressure — that’s exactly what we do.

We’re not just another swim school.

We’re the next evolution of survival swim.

Our lessons are structured to teach life-saving skills quickly and gently — while building confidence, trust, and joy in the water.

Your tuition includes everything:

💧 A full 7-week survival swim program with 24 customized lessons

💧 Any extra lessons needed — at no additional cost

💧 Support and training for parents to help reinforce skills after graduation

💧 A clear path to long-term swim confidence through our progression lessons

No surprise fees. No dragging it out. No emotional rollercoaster.

Just a program that works — faster, safer, and more compassionately than anything else out there.

And when it’s done, you don’t just leave with a safer swimmer… You leave with peace of mind.

Is once-a-week swim cheaper in the long run?

It might seem cheaper at first — but in the long run, it often costs way more.

Most traditional swim schools offer 30 minute lessons once a week… with 3 or 4 kids in the pool at the same time. That means your child may only get 7 minutes of actual one-on-one instruction each week.

At that pace, real progress often takes years. Families easily spend $1,200–$1,500 per year… and many kids still aren’t water-safe.

And that’s just the financial cost. The real cost is lost time — and the risk that your child still doesn’t know what to do in an emergency.

At South Shore Infant Aquatics, we focus on results. Our survival swim program is designed to teach your child essential water safety skills in just 7 weeks, with short, focused, one-on-one lessons four days a week.

It’s faster. It’s safer. And it’s a smarter investment — both for your wallet and your peace of mind.

Do you offer payment plans or split payments?

Yes — we make it easy for families.

Our tuition can be split into 3 or 4 simple payments (depending on the program), spaced out over the course of the program. Or, if you prefer, you can pay in full up front.

You’ll find all the details on our Programs & Pricing page — including exact costs and what’s included with your enrollment.

We believe peace of mind shouldn’t come with surprise fees or complicated payment systems. Just straightforward options that work for your family.

About When To Start & Other Program Details

How soon can we start?

That depends on availability — but the sooner you reach out, the better your chances of securing a spot.

We run on a session-based schedule and often fill up weeks in advance (especially in spring and summer). If you're ready to get started, head to our Programs & Pricing page to check for upcoming sessions and join the waitlist if needed.

Your child’s safety can’t wait — and we’ll do everything we can to get you started as soon as possible.

When are lessons scheduled?

Lessons run Monday through Thursday in the mornings and early afternoons. Each session lasts 7 weeks, with 12 minute private lessons held 4 days a week.

We’ll work with you to find a time that fits your schedule — but spots fill quickly, so we recommend enrolling early to get the best availability. You can view our current openings on the Programs & Pricing page.

If you don’t see a time that works, feel free to reach out — we may be able to make accommodations.

How long does the program take?

Our core survival swim program is designed to be completed in just 6–7 weeks.

Your child will attend short, focused private lessons four days a week, Monday through Thursday. Lessons are 12 Minutes long — the ideal length for young children to stay engaged, build muscle memory, and make fast progress without feeling overwhelmed.

By the end of the program, children can float, breathe, swim, and return to safety — even fully clothed.

And if your child needs more time?

As long as you’ve attended all scheduled lessons and followed our program guidelines, we’ll provide an additional week of lessons at no extra cost.

That’s our 7-Week Mastery Guarantee — no surprise fees, just a clear path to real results.

What kinds of lessons do you offer?

At South Shore Infant Aquatics, we focus on one thing — and we do it really well:
Survival swim lessons for infants and young children.

We teach children how to float, breathe, and swim to safety — even if they fall in fully clothed — using gentle, play-based techniques rooted in child development.

After graduation, we offer progression lessons to help your child continue building on their survival skills, teach pre-strokes, and introduce foundational swim techniques — like kicks, pulls, and breath control — and help your child transition from basic survival to true stroke development.

It’s not about maintaining skills — it’s about moving forward with confidence, strength, and proper form.

My child is afraid of swimming or putting their face in the water. Can you help?

Yes — and you're not alone.

Many children come to us with fear or hesitation around the water, especially if they’ve had a bad experience or have never had proper exposure. Our program is specifically designed to build confidence through trust, gentle guidance, and play-based learning.

We never force or rush a child. Instead, we meet them where they are — one small, safe step at a time. Our instructors are trained to recognize fear signals and respond with patience, encouragement, and proven techniques that help children feel in control.

It’s not unusual for a child who starts out fearful to leave our program smiling, floating, and even swimming with joy. That transformation is exactly why we do what we do.

Why don’t you use flotation devices during swim time?

Because they give a false sense of security — to both kids and parents. Flotation devices like puddle jumpers and floaties teach children to stay vertical in the water (the drowning position) and rely on gear instead of their own bodies. That makes it harder for them to learn real survival skills like floating, swimming, and getting to safety on their own.

We want children to feel confident without needing something strapped to their body. And by teaching them to float and swim independently, we’re giving them real skills they can use in an actual emergency — not just while supervised during play.

What happens after survival swim is complete?

Once your child completes the core survival swim program, they’ll know how to float, swim, breathe, and reach safety — even fully clothed. But the journey doesn’t stop there.

We offer progression lessons to help kids keep building on their skills. These short, focused sessions are designed to transition your child from self-rescue to strong, confident swimming. We focus on things like breath control, stamina, and developing early strokes — all through play-based techniques that make learning fun.

The goal isn’t just maintenance. It’s progress. So your child keeps growing in the water — safely, confidently, and joyfully.
